OUR HISTORY

OUR HISTORY

The Beginning

The need for organized fire protection emerged as the West Keansburg area continued to grow during the early twentieth century. At the time, the community was part of Raritan Township, a municipality established in 1848 that would later become Hazlet Township in 1967.

West Keansburg Fire Company No. 1 was organized on February 10, 1925, and officially incorporated on March 11, 1925. The company’s headquarters was established on 8th Street, where it remains today. During its first year, members constructed a 24-by-40-foot firehouse for $1,700, largely through volunteer labor and community support.

The company’s first firefighting equipment reflected the modest resources available at the time: three Indian tanks (man-carried water extinguishers), two buckets, and a flashlight. Despite limited equipment, the volunteers shared a common commitment to protecting their neighbors and property.

Building a Fire Company

As the community expanded, so did the fire company’s capabilities.

In 1927, the company purchased its first fire apparatus, a second-hand Ford chemical pumper acquired from New Point Comfort Fire Company for $600. Additional equipment followed as the needs of the growing community increased:

1937

A second used pumper was added to the fleet.

1940

A 1926 Stoughton pumper with a 200-gallon tank was purchased.

1949

A new Tasc 500-gallon pumper was acquired for $14,000.

1954

An Army Jeep was purchased and equipped with a portable lighting unit.

1957

A new Ward LaFrance pumper entered service for $15,500.

1957

A used 750-gallon tank truck was obtained from the Monmouth County Mosquito Commission for $750.

These purchases marked the beginning of a steady evolution that transformed West Keansburg Fire Company from a small neighborhood volunteer organization into a modern emergency response agency.

Serving a Growing Community

Following World War II, Hazlet Township experienced rapid residential and commercial development. Farmland gave way to neighborhoods, businesses expanded along Routes 35 and 36, and emergency service demands increased significantly.

To meet these challenges, West Keansburg firefighters continually enhanced their training, apparatus, equipment, and operational readiness. Through every era, members remained committed to providing reliable fire protection while embracing advancements in firefighting technology and emergency response techniques.

Today, the company operates modern firefighting apparatus, advanced protective equipment, and specialized tools unimaginable to the organization’s founders in 1925.
