Blue Emergency Light Law

N.J.S.A. 39:3-54.12


Under the above law mentioned, drivers of non-emergency vehicles shall yield to the right of way to the vehicle of any member of a volunteer fire company, volunteer first aid squad or rescue squad displaying warning emergency lights, as in the same manner as authorized or “marked” emergency vehicles. (N.J.S.A. 39:4-92)


When noticing a vehicle displaying an emergency warning light…

  • You MUST pull over to the side of the road closest to the right- hand curb.
  • DO NOT block any intersections
  • DO NOT follow emergency vehicles closer than 300 feet


Failure to comply with any of the above mentioned is punishable under the New Jersey State Law as a moving violation.
